"Why does my Vista Laptop have bad CPU spikes?
Every 5 minutes or so, sometimes once about every 30 seconds, my laptop goes through a massive CPU spike. Ram is slightly affected but not very much.
It will jump to 100% CPU usage for about 20-60 seconds, then slowly go back down to normal.
If I open Task Manager during these spikes, I can't see any program using all of that CPU power. At most maybe Steam is using 1-2 or so, FireFox might be using about 1, Windows Explorer might sometimes go to 1 or 2, Kaspersky might be using 1. And that's it. I only have about 5-7 processes open at any time, and most barely use any CPU or RAM.
If I set it to show processes from all users, which is just me and the system, I get, of course, a bunch of windows processes. But none of them is using all of this CPU power. If I add up the totals, I'm not even hitting 10% usage, in an idle state. In a semi-idle state, which would be like me using FireFox and Steam at once or something, it's about 15-20%."
